“We thank the Judicial Council for its approval of the naming of our Roseville Courthouse after the late Howard G. Gibson,” said Alan V. Pineschi, Presiding Judge of the Placer Superior Court. “This honor for Judge Gibson and his family is well deserved and fitting as he was a respected jurist who exemplified public service, access to justice and fairness. Howard is fondly remembered as a man who treated everyone he encountered, whether in court or out of court, with respect and kindness.”
Judge Gibson, a graduate of Roseville-area schools, joined the United States Army in July of 1942 and served in Europe and North Africa during World War II. After his return from the war, and upon his completion of the University of California’s Hastings School of Law, he opened a small general law practice in Roseville, California
Judge Howard G. Gibson then served as a judge in Placer County for over twenty-five years. He was first elected to the Roseville Justice Court in 1958 and then later appointed to the Placer Superior Court by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. in 1982. He retired from the Superior Court in 1984. During his time as a judge, he also served on the National Highway Transportation Safety Advisory Committee, via an appointment by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Judge Gibson passed away in November of 1986.
The court’s naming application received support from the local community, in particular the Roseville City Council, the Placer County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Edward Bonner, District Attorney Scott Owens, and the Placer County Bar Association.
